Our Story
Northallerton Osteopaths at Hale House is a well established multi-disciplinary healthcare practice, delivering expert health care from a wide range of therapies. We believe in a holistic approach to healing and our experienced practitioners reflect this in their work. Rather than treating only the symptoms, our practitioners treat the person as a whole in order to find the cause of a condition.
Awards

1994
Joanna Waterworth established Northallerton Osteopaths where she was originally based in South Parade as a sole practitioner.
1999
Expansion prompted the move to Croft House on Crosby Road, when Croft House Clinic was established as Northallerton's first multi-disciplinary complementary healthcare clinic .
2009
(Our sister clinic Easingwold Osteopaths was founded.)
2017
We expanded again as Joanna and Ross began their business partnership and moved into our new premises at Hale House.
Northallerton Osteopaths established itself as a limited company with Joanna and Ross as clinical directors. We are now one of the largest complementary healthcare clinics in North Yorkshire.
All our consultation rooms are now on the ground floor, offering full disabled access, there is free off-road parking in front of the clinic for our patients and we have an in-house studio where yoga, pilates and such like classes take place.

What to Expect - Initial Consultation

Consent
All patients are given a consent form to read through and sign. This gives you details of what you can expect as a patient and asks for your written consent so that we may assess and treat you.
Case History
You will then be introduced to your practitioner and will be asked to give a full account of your symptoms along with information about your lifestyle, general health and past medical history.
Examination
You will normally be asked to remove some of your clothing so that your osteopath can view the area of concern and a detailed assessment can be made. This will include observing your posture and movements to assess how your whole body relates mechanically to your complaint. Clinical and orthopaedic tests will be carried out where relevant. Some patients prefer to bring sports shorts to wear. Ladies might chose to wear a thin vest top.
Diagnosis & Treatment Plan -
Your osteopath will make a diagnosis and if appropriate, a treatment plan can then be agreed with you. Often, lifestyle advice such as work posture adjustments or suitable exercises are recommended.
Overall an initial consultation takes around 45-60 minutes and will include a treatment if appropriate.
In some cases osteopathic treatment may not be appropriate for you. If this happens we will discuss this with you and advise you on who you should speak to- for example your GP, or in some cases an alternative practitioner.
What to Expect - Osteopathic Treatment
Our osteopaths use their hands to assess, diagnose and treat you. Osteopaths are highly skilled in their sense of touch (palpation) and they use these skills to observe imbalances and dysfunction in the joints and soft tissue structures of the musculo-skeletal system (muscles, ligaments, capsules, fascia and tendons). Once the inter-relationship of these neighbouring structures is understood, they use a range of highly skilled techniques to treat the patient.
Treatments vary from patient to patient but may include:
- Soft tissue massage
- Joint articulation with varying degrees of subtlety
- Rhythmic stretching
- Joint manipulation
- Exercise prescription

We have limited patient parking to the front of Hale House. We have 4 car park spaces at the front of our clinic for patients. Alternatively, there is free 2 hour disc parking on Grammar School Lane which is less than 2 mins walk away. We have discs at the clinic for those travelling from outside the area.

FAQs
It is useful for your osteopath to see the area causing the problem. You will normally be asked to remove some of your clothing so that a detailed assessment can be made. Some patients prefer to bring sports shorts to wear. Ladies might chose to wear a thin vest top. You can request that your osteopath leaves the room whilst you undress if you are more comfortable with this.
No, you can choose to see an osteopath without a referral. Indeed most of our patients come to us via word of mouth from family or friends. We do have excellent communications with our local GP practices and with your permission, we let your GP know that you have attended to ensure that they are kept up to date about your health.
This varies from individual to individual.
In a recent audit of the clinic over 60% of our patients have their problem resolved within 3 visits, and 90% within 6 treatments.
If you are suffering from a long-term problem it may take longer to notice an improvement.
Additionally, more people are recognising the need to look after their own health more and they elect to attend for regular maintenance treatments to keep on top of symptoms.
Your appointment time is reserved just for you. A late cancellation or missed visit leaves a hole in the therapist's day that could have been offered to another patient - we often have a waiting list. As such, we require a minimum of 24 hours notice for cancellations or any changes to your appointment. Missed appointments or cancellations within 24 hours may be charged up to the full session fee.
Prepaid online appointments that are cancelled with more than 24 hours notice will be issued with a full refund.
We do have disabled access for wheelchair users. All our treatment rooms are on the ground floor.
Since osteopathy does not use any drugs or invasive treatment, it is not necessary to consult a GP beforehand. However, if you have a complicated medical history, a GP consultation is recommended. We adapt treatment to suit you. Because you are in pain when you seek our help, some of the areas we touch are likely to be tender but we will work at a level that you are comfortable with.
It is normal for you to feel a little achy and stiff after a treatment, this will usually resolve within 24 to 48 hours after treatment. If it does not settle or you are worried please call the clinic to speak to your practitioner.
Most private health insurance policies will cover osteopathic treatment, but please check your policy before you book as some providers will require that you are referred to us by your GP and/or that the practitioner is registered with the insurance company.

We are recognised providers for Bupa, AXAPP, WPA, Simply Health and other Private Health Plans. If you have private medical insurance, then please see whether your policy covers for Osteopathy or Acupuncture. Feel free to call and check whether your practitioner is a registered provider. Not all practitioners are registered with all of the above mentioned insurance providers.
Yes, we have a range of toys and books to keep young children occupied whilst you are treated or to distract them during their own treatment. We also have a downstairs toilet which has space to change nappies and we provide a potty. Prams can be brought into our treatment rooms or left in reception.
Yes, this is absolutely fine. We ask that children under the age of 16 should always be accompanied by a parent to their first appointment. If you cannot bring a friend or relative but would still like a chaperone, then we can provide one for you.
A pregnancy is extremely demanding on a woman’s body and may lead to problems like lower and mid back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, hip pain, pelvic pain, post-natal coccyx and symphysis pubis pain and symphysis pubis disorder. Osteopathic treatments can relieve these problems while helping the body adapt to the many changes that occur during a pregnancy.
